Stephanie’s knee op proves a knife edge thriller for surgeons

As recent as May last year a film of a keen hiker’s operation was beamed live to watching experts

The backdrop for the film was one of the Regency hospital’s state of the art operating theatres and the 'star' of the show was ….a knee!

It belonged to 70 year old retired Macclesfield art teacher Stephanie Dakin who literally went under the surgeon’s knife to provide a real life drama for an audience of 90 eminent doctors.

And they viewed the whole thing live via satellite from a luxury hotel FOUR MILES away. Experienced orthopaedic consultants from all around the world could never have crammed into an operating theatre to watch a new style false knee being fitted. So instead they gathered in the comfort of De Vere Mottram Hall for a medical conference with a difference.

The medi-telly was a world first for delegates who travelled from countries including Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Greece, as well as many from across the UK. And they watched the premiere – the installation of the Oxford knee. www.oxfordknee.net

The event was hosted by local orthopaedic consultant Mr Graham Keys who welcomed the delegation at the hotel before driving to the hospital to put on his surgical scrubs.

Meanwhile, grandmother of four, Stephanie Dakin of Lime Grove, Macclesfield is delighted with her new knee. This was Stephanie’s second knee replacement by Mr Keys at the Regency Hospital.

She sad: "I was in such pain before. I might be on walking sticks now but I have pulled out my old walking boots and I am ready for action"

Stephanie, who is convalescing under the tender loving care of husband, Chris, said she was glad she had made medical history. “But everyone seems to have seen the film except me!” she said.

Now she can’t wait to take up where she left off running art work shops at Macclesfield Museum where she is also a volunteer.
